WHAT IS EMDR?

The primary goal of EMDR is to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories by facilitating the processing of these memories on a neurological level. EMDR is recognized as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions. It is based on the idea that the mind can heal from psychological trauma much like the body recovers from physical injury when given the right support.

Here’s a breakdown of how trauma therapy using EMDR typically works:

Do It For You

The therapist works with the individual to identify specific memories that are causing distress. These memories are often linked to past traumatic experiences.

During EMDR sessions, the person recalls distressing memories while simultaneously undergoing bilateral stimulation. This bilateral stimulation can take the form of the therapist moving their fingers back and forth, auditory tones, or other forms of left-right stimulation.

The bilateral stimulation is thought to help the brain reprocess these memories, making them less distressing over time. The person may experience a shift in their thoughts and feelings about the traumatic event.

Positive beliefs are then “installed” to replace negative ones associated with the traumatic memory. This involves fostering a sense of empowerment, safety, and self-worth.

The therapist helps the individual identify and release any residual physical tension or discomfort associated with the traumatic memory.
